What Aloft Harlem actually is
Aloft Harlem opened in 2010 as the first new-build hotel the neighbourhood had seen in a very long time, and it remains the main branded option north of Central Park. It runs the standard Aloft format: loft-style rooms with platform beds and walk-in showers, a lobby bar and a pool table.
The location is a strong one for anyone interested in Harlem itself. The Apollo Theater is two blocks away, Marcus Garvey Park is a short walk east, and the 125th Street stations put Midtown fifteen minutes away on the express. Rates run well below Manhattan's average.

Harlem is where Manhattan stops being a grid of offices and starts being a set of neighborhoods people actually live in. The brownstone blocks off Lenox and Adam Clayton Powell are some of the handsomest residential streets in the city, and the stretch of 125th Street is still the commercial and cultural spine it has been for a century.
