What Brooklyn Motor Inn actually is

The Brooklyn Motor Inn is a small independent property near the boundary of Red Hook and Carroll Gardens, offering simple rooms with parking — the latter genuinely useful in a part of Brooklyn poorly served by the subway.

Carroll Gardens' brownstone streets and Court Street restaurants are a short walk east. Red Hook to the south-west has no subway at all, which is why it retains its cobbled streets, working harbour and the best unobstructed Statue of Liberty view in the city from the piers.

Where it sits

Carroll Gardens is Italian brownstone Brooklyn with unusually deep front gardens and a very good restaurant row on Smith Court Street. Red Hook below it is cut off from the subway entirely, which has kept it strange and low and industrial — cobbled streets, a working harbor, and the single best skyline view in the city from the piers at the end of Van Brunt Street. Lodging is scarce and characterful.
