What Carlton Arms Hotel actually is

The Carlton Arms is unlike anything else in New York. Since around 1980 it has invited artists to paint its rooms, corridors, stairwells and bathrooms, and they have never stopped — every surface in the building is a mural, and rooms are periodically repainted by new artists.

Practically it is a budget hotel: small rooms, many with shared bathrooms, no lift, no restaurant, no television. But it is a genuine piece of New York's art history and one of the cheapest beds in Manhattan, on a quiet block between Gramercy and Kips Bay.
