What Four Seasons Hotel New York actually is
I.M. Pei designed this hotel and it shows from the moment you walk into the lobby, where a backlit onyx ceiling rises over ten metres above a limestone floor. It opened on East 57th Street in 1993 and was, for a long time, the most expensive hotel ever built in New York.
The rooms are unusually large by Manhattan standards — the entry-level rooms are bigger than suites at many competitors — with high ceilings, deep soaking tubs and windows that actually let light in. The location is Midtown at its most commercial, midway between Park and Madison, which makes it a business hotel by default, but the scale of the rooms and the quality of the service push it beyond that.
