What Hotel Belleclaire actually is
The Belleclaire was designed by Emery Roth and opened on Broadway at 77th Street in 1903, one of his earliest significant buildings. Mark Twain and Maxim Gorky both stayed. The Art Nouveau exterior is landmarked, and the lobby retains some of the original character after a renovation that modernised the guest rooms.
Rooms range from compact to family-sized, and some categories use shared bathrooms, which keeps rates genuinely low for Manhattan. The Upper West Side location is residential and calm, with the Museum of Natural History four blocks east, Central Park a short walk, and Zabar's and the neighbourhood's food shops nearby.
