What Hotel Chelsea actually is
The Chelsea Hotel housed Dylan Thomas, Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith, Janis Joplin and Sid Vicious across a century of residency, and its red-brick Victorian Gothic frontage with cast-iron balconies is a designated landmark. It closed to guests in 2011 and reopened in stages after a long and contested restoration.
The restored hotel keeps the grand staircase, the art collection accumulated from residents paying in kind, and a number of long-term tenants still living upstairs. Rooms vary widely — some are compact, some are enormous with fireplaces and terraces — and El Quijote, the Spanish restaurant that opened here in 1930, is back downstairs.

Questions people ask about Hotel Chelsea
Do people still live in the Chelsea?
Yes. A number of long-term rent-stabilised residents remained through the renovation and still occupy apartments in the building.
Are the rooms all the same?
Far from it — the Chelsea was never built to a uniform plan, so layouts, ceiling heights and features vary substantially between rooms.
