What Hotel Wolcott actually is

The Wolcott opened on West 31st Street in 1904, designed by John Duncan — the architect of Grant's Tomb — with a lobby of gilded columns, ornamental plasterwork and chandeliers that would not look out of place in a hotel charging four times the rate. It has never been renovated out of that character.

The guest rooms are plain and functional, which is the trade-off: you get one of the more spectacular hotel lobbies in Manhattan and a very central NoMad location for a rate that undercuts most of the neighbourhood. Herald Square and Macy's are two blocks west, the Empire State Building is three blocks north-east, and Penn Station is a short walk.

Questions people ask about Hotel Wolcott

Is the lobby really that grand?

Yes. The 1904 Beaux-Arts lobby with its gilded columns and plasterwork is the building's main draw and is far more elaborate than the room rate suggests.

Are the rooms modern?

They are simple and functional rather than designed. The value is in the location and the building, not the guest rooms.
