What Royalton New York actually is
When Ian Schrager and Philippe Starck reopened the Royalton in 1988 they effectively invented the boutique hotel lobby as a destination — the long, dim, theatrical space with its runway of a corridor was imitated across the world for the following two decades. The building itself dates to 1898 and sits on West 44th Street opposite the Algonquin.
Subsequent renovations have softened the original starkness, but the drama of the ground floor survives. Rooms are contemporary and reasonably sized, and the location on 44th between Fifth and Sixth is a strong one — Bryant Park, the New York Public Library and the theatre district are all within a few minutes' walk.
