What The Algonquin Hotel Times Square actually is

The Algonquin opened on West 44th Street in 1902 and became famous in the 1920s as the meeting place of the Round Table — the daily lunch group that included Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley and Harold Ross, who founded The New Yorker from a table here. The hotel has never let anyone forget it, and the lobby still functions as a literary shrine.

There has also been a resident cat since the 1930s, traditionally named Hamlet if male and Matilda if female. Beyond the history, it is a comfortable, moderately priced hotel in the heart of the theatre district, run under Marriott's Autograph badge. Rooms are compact, as is normal for a building of this age, but the public spaces are the reason to stay.

Is there really a hotel cat?

Yes. The tradition dates to the 1930s and continues; the cat has the run of the lobby and is one of the more photographed residents of West 44th Street.
