The Algonquin opened on West 44th Street in 1902 and became famous in the 1920s as the meeting place of the Round Table — the daily lunch group that included Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley and Harold Ross, who founded The New Yorker from a table here. The hotel has never let anyone forget it, and the lobby still functions as a literary shrine.
There has also been a resident cat since the 1930s, traditionally named Hamlet if male and Matilda if female. Beyond the history, it is a comfortable, moderately priced hotel in the heart of the theatre district, run under Marriott's Autograph badge.
