What The Chatwal actually is
The Chatwal occupies the former Lambs Club, a Stanford White building on West 44th Street that housed the oldest theatrical club in America. Thierry Despont restored it and reopened it as a hotel in 2010, working in an Art Deco register that suits the building and the block.
It is small — well under a hundred rooms — and unusually quiet for a hotel a hundred metres from Times Square. The rooms are panelled and comfortable rather than showy, with butler service included. For Broadway trips it is close to unbeatable on location: most theatres are within a five-minute walk, and Bryant Park is two blocks east.
