What The Greenwich Hotel actually is

Robert De Niro co-founded The Greenwich, and it is the most discreet luxury hotel in Lower Manhattan — 88 rooms, no two decorated alike, arranged around a glass-roofed courtyard. There is no signage worth mentioning and the lobby feels like a private drawing room.

The Shibui Spa in the basement is the reason to book: a 250-year-old Kyoto farmhouse was dismantled, shipped and reassembled around a swimming pool lit by lanterns, with wood-and-bamboo treatment rooms off it. Locanda Verde, Andrew Carmellini's Italian restaurant, occupies the ground floor and is a neighbourhood institution.

Questions people ask about The Greenwich Hotel

Is the Shibui Spa pool open to non-guests?

Access is essentially for hotel guests and spa members. Book treatments well in advance if you are staying.

Why do the rooms all look different?

By design — each of the 88 rooms was individually specified with different tile, textiles and furniture, so no two are identical.
