What The Jane Hotel actually is
The Jane was built in 1908 as the American Seamen's Friend Society Sailors' Home, and surviving crew from the Titanic were housed here in 1912. Its standard rooms are still built to the original cabin dimensions — roughly 50 square feet, with a single or bunk bed, a small TV and shared bathrooms down the hall.
It is the cheapest way to sleep in the West Village, and the trade-off is obvious: these are tiny rooms with shared facilities. Larger Captain's Cabins with private bathrooms and river views are available. The Ballroom bar downstairs, all velvet and taxidermy, is a genuine landmark.

Where it sits
Off-grid streets, low buildings, and NYU. The Village rewards walking more than any other part of Manhattan, and the hotels here are mostly small conversions rather than towers.

Questions people ask about The Jane Hotel
Do standard rooms have private bathrooms?
No. Standard and bunk cabins use shared bathrooms in the hallway. Only Captain's Cabins have private facilities.
Is 50 square feet really liveable?
For one person travelling light, for a few nights, yes — it is designed like a train berth. For longer stays or with luggage, book a Captain's Cabin.
