What The Knickerbocker Hotel actually is
The Knickerbocker was built by John Jacob Astor IV in 1906 on the corner of 42nd and Broadway, became an office building in 1921, and was restored as a hotel in 2015. The Beaux-Arts facade is landmarked, and there is a still-visible doorway in the Times Square subway station that once led directly into the hotel.
St. Cloud, the rooftop bar, looks straight down at One Times Square — it is the closest hotel rooftop to the New Year's Eve ball, and it sells out a year in advance for 31 December. Rooms are traditional, well-insulated against the noise, and larger than most in the district.
