What The Mark actually is

The Mark reopened after a full Jacques Grange redesign that swapped Upper East Side formality for graphic black-and-white marble, bold stripes and modern art. It sits a block from the Metropolitan Museum, and on the first Monday in May it becomes the most photographed lobby in the city as Met Gala guests assemble here.

The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges handles food, the Frédéric Fekkai salon handles hair, and the hotel's fleet of Mark-branded bicycles handles Central Park. Rooms are pale, generously proportioned, and quieter than anything of equivalent standing in Midtown.
