What The Mercer Hotel actually is

When The Mercer opened in 1998 in an 1890 Romanesque Revival building, it more or less invented the downtown loft hotel: high ceilings, exposed brick, steel-framed windows, and Christian Liaigre's spare furniture in African hardwoods. Almost every SoHo hotel since has borrowed from it.

The lobby doubles as a library and guest lounge, and The Mercer Kitchen in the basement — Jean-Georges Vongerichten's long-running downtown room — is still busy every night. Rooms are large by Manhattan standards with oversized bathrooms, several with two-person tubs.

Questions people ask about The Mercer Hotel

Is The Mercer still worth it after 25 years?

The rooms have been refreshed but the design intent hasn't changed. If you want the original downtown loft hotel rather than a newer interpretation of one, it holds up.

How noisy is Mercer Street?

Quieter than Broadway one block west. Rooms facing the interior are the calmest option on busy weekends.
