This W occupies the former Guardian Life building on Union Square East, a 1911 Beaux-Arts landmark with a mansard roof and heavy stone detailing that makes it one of the more distinctive buildings on the square. The conversion kept the exterior and the grand staircase while inserting a contemporary hotel behind them.
Union Square is one of the best-connected points in Manhattan — the 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R and W all stop beneath it — and the Greenmarket runs four days a week outside.
