What The Maritime Hotel actually is
The Maritime is instantly recognisable from the street: a white tile-clad building on Ninth Avenue at 16th Street punched with round porthole windows, built in 1966 as the headquarters of the National Maritime Union. It was converted to a hotel in 2003 and the nautical theme was taken seriously rather than apologetically.
Rooms are compact and fitted out like ship cabins — teak panelling, built-in furniture, and a five-foot porthole framing the view. The location is very strong: Chelsea Market is across the street, the High Line is a block west, and the Meatpacking District and West Village start immediately south. The hotel's restaurants and courtyard bar are busy in their own right.

Questions people ask about The Maritime Hotel
Are the rooms small?
Yes, deliberately so — they are modelled on ship cabins, around 20 square metres, with efficient built-in storage. The trade-off is a prime Chelsea location.
How close is the High Line?
About a block west. Chelsea Market is directly across Ninth Avenue.
